Lessons are not just about learning an instrument! Learning an instrument benefits memory, organisational skills, self-discipline, attentiveness, the ability to read others emotions and self-confidence to name but a few. My approach to teaching is to ensure that the student gets all of the educational, social, emotional and personal benefits of a quality music education. I encourage students to enjoy learning as much as possible. I explain the purpose of every exercise to them and want all of my students to have a desire to improve and become more skilled.
A Note on Practice:
Practice is essential when learning an instrument. Students must practive several times a week. Parents of beginners will need to help out with practice at first and I encourage parents to sit in on lessons to enable them to do this. My beginners are encouraged to take charge of their own practice from very early on, so after a few weeks the parent should only need to give reminders to practice! Click on "Information for Parents" for more detailed information on what happens in a piano lesson, how to practice, how often to practice and more.
Piano
Piano lessons start at 30mins long for beginners. Lessons can start at age 6 (or 60!). Those taking Grade 6 and above will need 45mins per week. Beginners learn music theory within their lesson, those taking Grade 1 and higher attend a free 45min theory class each week.
Recorder
Recorder lessons follow the same format as piano lessons. Recorder can be a great starter instrument before moving onto something like flute. Or you can continue recorder and learn to play all four major members of the recorder family!
Music Theory
All of my students study music theory from day one and theory is cumpulsory for those aged 12 years and under. For beginners to Grade 1 theory is incorporated into the lesson. I offer a free weekly 45min theory class for Grade 1 and up (subject to demand). Theory is also available one-to-one. Class times are as follows:
Theory Grades 1-3 Thursdays at 4.45
My Theory Grades 1-3 class have published this theory newsletter called The Barlines. Check it out!
